If you’re going to use IDM for longer than two years, the lifetime key is cheaper and you stop having to think about it. If you’re not sure you’ll stick with it, or you’re a student who’ll be on a different machine in a year, start with the twelve month licence.
One honest note about the lifetime option. Tonec’s terms say the licence itself never expires, but free updates may be limited to three years from first activation. They have not enforced that so far and users keep updating without paying. Just don’t buy it on the assumption that free updates in 2035 are contractually guaranteed, because they aren’t.
What IDM actually does
Splits downloads into parallel streams
Your browser typically opens one connection and pulls the file through it. IDM opens several and downloads different chunks of the same file at once, then stitches them together.
