The Scam Calls Actually Reaching Nepali Numbers

Generic spam-blocking advice ignores that scam patterns are regional. Here’s what’s actually circulating, and what caller ID does about each.

Fake prize and lottery calls. “You’ve won an Ncell or NTC lucky draw.” You’re asked for a fee, a recharge, or an OTP to release the prize. No operator runs prize draws requiring payment. These numbers get reported quickly, so caller ID usually flags them.

OTP and digital wallet fraud. Someone claiming to be from eSewa, Khalti, or your bank asks you to read back a code “to verify your account.” That code is a one-time password authorising a transfer out of your account. No bank or wallet will ever ask for an OTP. The call feels legitimate because the caller often already knows your name.

Foreign job offer scams. A recruiter offers work in the Gulf or Malaysia, then asks for a processing fee. This one causes real financial damage in Nepal, frequently to people who can least absorb it. Legitimate recruitment goes through licensed agencies, not cold calls.

Fake authority calls. Police, immigration, customs, or a courier claiming a parcel in your name contains something illegal — followed by pressure and a demand for payment to make it go away. The “digital arrest” variant, where victims are held on a video call for hours, has spread across South Asia and now reaches Nepal.

Loan app harassment. Predatory lending apps harvest your contact list and then call your family and colleagues about your debt. Blocking helps; not installing the apps helps more.

Tech support scams. “Your computer has a virus,” from someone claiming to be Microsoft. Microsoft does not phone people.

What caller ID actually does here: it doesn’t make you immune. It puts a warning on the screen before you pick up, which breaks the moment of surprise these scams depend on. Most of them work because the victim is caught off guard, and a screen reading “Spam Likely” removes that advantage.

What it doesn’t do: a number that started operating yesterday won’t be flagged yet. The rules that always apply — never share an OTP, never pay a fee to receive money, never act under time pressure on a phone call — matter more than any app.

How Truecaller Works

Two systems working together.

A crowdsourced directory. When a number calls, Truecaller checks it against one of the largest caller databases in existence and shows you a name and context.

Community spam reporting. When users mark a number as spam, that feeds back in. Numbers reported by enough people surface as “Spam” or “Scam Likely” to everyone else.

The accuracy comes from scale — hundreds of millions of users contributing means the database covers essentially every number that spams at volume.

Worth knowing the flip side. That directory is built substantially from contact lists uploaded by users, which means your name and number may be in it because somebody you know installed the app, not because you did. Truecaller has faced criticism over consent in several markets on exactly this point, and paying for Premium doesn’t change how the underlying database was assembled. If that bothers you, it’s a reasonable reason not to use the service at all, and we’d rather say so than pretend the question doesn’t exist.

Setting It Up Properly

Most people install Truecaller, grant permissions, and never open the settings. That leaves most of what you paid for switched off. Fifteen minutes here is worth more than the subscription.

Set it as your default caller ID app. On Android: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Caller ID & spam app → Truecaller. Without this, identification is slower and less reliable.

On iPhone, go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Blocking & Identification and enable Truecaller. On iOS 18.2 and above, also enable Live Caller ID so names appear on the lock screen before you answer.

Turn on Top Spammers blocking. Truecaller → Settings → Block → Top Spammers. This auto-blocks the worst-rated numbers globally. It is the single highest-value setting and it is off by default.

Enable foreign number filtering if most of your legitimate calls are domestic. Block → Block foreign numbers. This kills most international scam traffic at once.

Decide about hidden numbers. Blocking private and withheld numbers stops a category of nuisance calls, but hospitals, banks, and office switchboards sometimes withhold. Turn it on, and turn it off if you miss something important.

Add your own block list. Any number that gets through once can be blocked permanently with two taps from the call log.

Review what’s shared. Settings → Privacy Centre lets you control profile visibility, availability status, and activity sharing. Worth going through once rather than never.

Check it’s actually working. Have someone call from a number you don’t have saved. If no name appears, permissions didn’t stick — reinstall and grant them again.

Setting It Up for a Parent

This is the most common reason Nepali families buy Truecaller Premium, and it’s worth doing properly rather than just handing over a subscription.

Older people are targeted disproportionately, and they’re least likely to have encountered the specific tactics before. A few things that make the difference:

Do the setup yourself. Don’t send a link and hope. Install it on their phone, grant the permissions, turn on Top Spammers and foreign number filtering, and set it as the default caller ID app.

Use Family Protection. Truecaller’s family feature lets up to five people join a trusted group. As admin you set protection levels and manage blocklists for them, and on Android you can be alerted to suspicious calls and end them remotely on their phone. That last capability is the whole point of the feature.

Have the conversation as well as installing the app. The app flags known numbers; it can’t flag a new one. Three rules, repeated until they stick: never share an OTP with anyone who calls you, never pay money to receive money, and hang up and call back on a number you looked up yourself.

Tell them it’s fine to hang up. A lot of people get caught because hanging up on someone feels rude. Give them explicit permission to be rude to strangers on the phone.

What Truecaller Knows, and What You Can Control

Being straight about this, because it’s a caller ID app and the question is reasonable.

How your number gets in. The directory is built largely from contact lists uploaded by users who granted the app access. Your details can be listed because an acquaintance installed it, whether or not you ever did.

You can remove yourself. Truecaller operates an unlisting process on its website. You deactivate your account first, then submit your number for removal. This works whether or not you’ve ever used the app.

What Premium doesn’t change. Paying removes ads and unlocks blocking. It doesn’t alter what the directory holds about you or how it was collected.

Contacts permission. Truecaller wants access to your contacts to work fully. You can decline and still use core caller ID with reduced functionality. It’s a genuine trade-off and you’re entitled to weigh it.

Truecaller vs Your Phone’s Built-In Filtering

Both Android and iOS have some native protection, so it’s fair to ask what you’re paying for.

Android includes Google’s caller ID and spam protection in the Phone app, which flags suspected spam on many devices. It’s decent and it’s free. The database is smaller than Truecaller’s and noticeably weaker on South Asian numbers specifically — which is where most of your problem traffic originates.

iOS offers Silence Unknown Callers, which sends every number not in your contacts to voicemail. Effective and blunt: you’ll miss the delivery driver, the hospital, and the recruiter along with the spam. Truecaller lets you distinguish between unknown-and-fine and unknown-and-spam.

Carrier filtering. Some operators offer basic blocking. Coverage is patchy and configuration is awkward.

The honest summary: if you get one or two spam calls a week, native filtering probably suffices and you don’t need this. If you’re getting several a day, particularly from international numbers, Truecaller’s database is meaningfully better at the specific problem you have.

Caller ID stopped identifying numbers. Usually a permissions problem after an app or OS update. Check Truecaller is still the default caller ID app and that contacts and phone permissions are granted.

Calls are getting through that shouldn’t. Check Top Spammers blocking is switched on. It’s off by default and it’s the setting most people miss.

You’re blocking calls you wanted. Turn off hidden number blocking first — it’s the most common cause of missed legitimate calls.

Battery drain. Truecaller runs a background service to identify calls, which uses some power. If it’s excessive, check you don’t have two caller ID apps competing.
