Anime stopped being a niche hobby in Nepal a while ago. Walk through any campus in Kathmandu and you’ll find Demon Slayer wallpapers, One Piece arguments, and someone waiting for the next Jujutsu Kaisen episode to drop.

Crunchyroll bills in dollars, which means an international card, which means bank declines, forex limits, and a support ticket you’ll never hear back from. So most people ended up on pirate sites: 480p, hardcoded watermarks, pop-ups that install things, and subs that show up two days late after Twitter already spoiled the episode.

The free tier is gone, and that changes things

If you’ve been getting by on Crunchyroll’s ad-supported tier, that option no longer exists. Crunchyroll ended its free, ad-supported plan on 31 December 2025, and from 1 January anyone who wants to watch anything on the platform needs a paid subscription. New accounts still get a 7-day trial, but that’s it.

It wasn’t much of a loss by then. The free tier had been shrinking for years and lost simulcast access back in 2022, leaving only a small rotating set of older episodes. But it does mean there’s no longer a free door into the platform.

Prices went up four weeks later, too. From 2 February 2026 the Fan tier moved from $7.99 to $9.99 a month, Mega Fan from $11.99 to $13.99, and Ultimate Fan from $15.99 to $17.99. Existing monthly subscribers saw the change on their next billing date after 4 March. It’s the first Fan tier increase since 2019.

What you actually get

Ad-free streaming on every tier

No pre-rolls, no mid-episode breaks in the middle of a fight scene, no banner ads. All Crunchyroll tiers are ad-free, which is more than you can say for most streaming platforms right now. The episode plays from the OP to the ED and stops.

One-hour simulcasts

New episodes land roughly sixty minutes after they air in Japan, with professionally translated subtitles rather than machine output. This is the fastest legal way to keep up with a seasonal show, and realistically the fastest way full stop — faster than most fansub groups, and fast enough that you can watch before your feed spoils it.

The full library

More than 1,300 series and tens of thousands of episodes across shonen, seinen, shojo, isekai, slice-of-life, horror, comedy, mecha, romance, and sports. Every tier gets the whole catalogue. You’re not paying more to unlock shows.

Full HD streaming

Crunchyroll streams up to 1080p. It doesn’t offer 4K, largely because very little anime is produced at that resolution in the first place, and 1080p is what almost every title is mastered at. Anyone advertising 4K anime streaming is selling you something that doesn’t exist.

Understanding Crunchyroll’s tiers

For one person watching alone, Fan covers everything that matters — ad-free, full library, simulcasts, downloads. The higher tiers buy you concurrent streams and perks, not content.

Mega Fan is worth it if you’re sharing with family, watching across four devices, or want the Game Vault and HD downloads. Ultimate Fan is for people who want the manga library, the merch bag, and the bigger store discount.

Why legal beats pirate sites

Quality. Pirate sites mostly serve 480p or 720p with compression artifacts and burned-in watermarks. Crunchyroll gives you clean 1080p with properly encoded audio.

Speed. Fansubs arrive hours or days after the Japanese broadcast. Crunchyroll arrives in one, with translations done by people who actually speak the language.

Honest limitations

We’d rather you know these before you pay than after.

Some titles vary by region. Licensing is negotiated territory by territory. Most of the library is available, but the occasional show won’t be.

Your internet matters. 1080p needs a stable 5+ Mbps. During Nepali evening peak hours on a weak connection, adaptive bitrate will drop you to lower quality.

Subs come first, dubs come later. Simulcasts are subtitled. English dubs typically follow weeks or months after the original airing. If you only watch dubbed, you’re waiting.

No 4K. Crunchyroll tops out at 1080p. Almost no anime is produced in 4K anyway, but if someone promised you 4K anime, they were wrong.

Newly licensed shows can take time. Crunchyroll doesn’t carry everything airing in Japan, and some announcements take weeks to appear.

Fan tier is one stream and one download device. If two people want to watch different things at once, you need Mega Fan.
